For Young Writers

Being short led naturally into being a writer for me. [Paul Fleischman]

Me too. And I wasn't just short. I was klutzy. I was terrible at sports. So I did what I knew I could do. I wrote. It still took me a long time before I realized I was a writer. If you write often, because you feel like writing, you're a writer. It's that simple.

Young people ought to have lots of opportunities to write about about whatever they want to–whatever moves them or makes them laugh or get angry or want to change the world. I think adults in power need to hear young voices loud and clear whenever they make decisions about education, or health care, and especially when they decide to go to war.
